Self-Image Restoration

Eph 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Eph 2:9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

As a human being, we can’t choose these things: birth place, ethnic and parents. But the Word of God says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are not an accidental product, but God has thought about us even before He laid the foundation of this world. He sends us to this world, regardless how our conception took place, whether in a ‘holy’ or non ‘holy’ environment. Every one of us is God sent.

He has a MEGA PLAN for each of us, and the enemy does not like this. We live in a fallen world, and the bigger the plan of God for someone the harder the enemy would try to destroy that person. Destruction can happen due to past trauma, not having a good father or mother figure, and sexual, physical, or even verbal abuse.

A person whose self-image is destroyed, has a tendency to live in rebellion, looking for identity, recognition, acceptance, love, and appreciation, which is basic need to the soul of man. The world today and the root of all its complicated problems actually started with crushed self-image of a person, or the society at large. In short, the world and all its charm may have ruined us, but God already prepared Salvation and a way out for all of us.

Clearly, the Word of God mentions to us again and again that the Salvation we receive is because of Grace, meaning something we don’t deserve to get, but because of God’s mercy and loving kindness, He was still willing to die for us. Even if we have good enough deeds to be considered, the wage of sin is still death, and the deeds that we thought were good, actually is actually like dirty rags before God.

These are the steps that we can take in order for our Self-Image to be restored:

  • Know God: whether through someone who brings us to know Him, or in some cases God can even meet us directly.
  • Repent: Turn away from evil and live according to God’s way and principles. Think differently, leave old life behind, find righteous things to do.
  • Have healthy and righteous community or friendship. The purpose is so we can strengthen one another.
  • Have a regular quiet time with God. Our close relationship with God will affect our relationship with others, whether in marriage, work, and friendship.
  • Be open minded and willing to be corrected by our spouse, or someone who is more mature spiritually.

When God already restored your life, please remember that there are good things He wants to entrust you with. What is it? He wants you to help others who are in the same conditions as you were. He wants us to be His partners in bringing restoration to many lives. Even if you still have to face many other problems or challenges, fear not, because He promised that He would always be with you. God bless you!
