Seek the Things Above

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:1-3 NIV

What are you seeking in your life? Most people are looking for power and wealth. They think by having them, they will find satisfaction and all their problems will be answered.  Because of this misunderstanding, many have made power and wealth to be their main focus and drive in life.  They will try anything in their capacity, right or wrong, to be able to gain them.  At the end they realized that it is like chasing after the wind. The big void in their heart is still not patched, and many even ended up in misery.

It does not mean God opposes the idea for us to be successful and wealthy in this world.  Do you know that it is God who makes people to have the ability and power to be rich and powerful (Deuteronomy 8:18)?.  Therefore, when we focus our lives on Him, then we actually are thinking on a higher dimension. From being earthly and self-centered to becoming Kingdom-of-God centered.

When we are able to seek the things above, we will understand that all power, authority and dominion have been given to Jesus. He loves to share all of this greatness with us, His body, so that we will be able to disciple and influence the world according to His desire.

Having this understanding, it means every one of you has a certain amount of influence. Therefore you cannot give any more excuses that you might be too old or too young. Wherever aspect of life you are in, that’s the place where you need to spread your influence. Sometimes, in those places you cannot even declare that you are a Christian. What you need to do is just make people see how you live: the way you run your business, treat your subordinates, respond to your boss and problems, even the way you treat your spouse and children.

In this kind of society, you need to realize that when you show your life like an open book, then by your fruits people will know that you are different. You got something that they don’t have. You may not be richer or even smarter than them, but you really have something that neither money nor wealth can buy. That’s the time when you are ready to introduce Christ to them.

When you are able to set both your heart and mind on the things above, you will be able to repurpose all things according to His plan and desires in your life. You will understand that you are bought at such an expensive price by they blood of the Lamb of God and the life you have is not yours anymore. Therefore when any temptation comes and wants to bring you down, you constantly need to remember that you have to mortify this flesh.

In this super-busy world we live in, we need to have a consistent quiet time with the Lord. At least by reading a chapter a day will help you to maintain your faith in Him. If you have trouble in understanding what the Bible says, try to listen to audio Bible. In my exercise time, I jog and listen to the audio Bible at once. That way, I enjoy the benefits of having healthier body and stronger spirit. Then, when I go to the world, I am ready with all possibilities that I will have to deal with according to the wisdom of God.

This is the time to ask Him to rekindle our fire again. Some of us maybe doing well, but we have lost our focus and first love towards Him.  Ask Him to touch your life one more time so that whatever stage of life you are in, you will be able to glorify His name. Amen!
