BABY STEPS

A few days ago, I was walking through the yard with my two-year-old son. He wanted so much to be with me, going where I was going, doing what I was doing. He would reach up and grab my hand to make sure that he went wherever I did (or the other way around - I'm not really sure). As we walked, I looked down, and noticed that for every one of my steps, he would take two or three of his little ones just to stay caught up. So I slowed down a little, in order to make it a little easier for him to stay there by my side.

He so wanted to help in everything, whether it was watering the garden, picking vegetables or washing the car. I didn't really need his help, and I might even have gotten it done faster without him, but I just loved having him around. It made me feel good that he wanted so much to share in what I was doing. And it made HIM feel good that I wanted him there with ME, too.

Too often we become so focused on "doing" for God, that we forget about the joy of just being with Him. We like to think that we are important, or even indispensable; but the fact of the matter is, our greatest leaps are just
baby steps next to God. He shares with us, guides us, holds our hand at times, and let's us help him. But come on - He's GOD. He created the entire universe by Himself; what exactly is it he NEEDS our help with?! I suspect that his plans would go a lot smoother without all of us little free-will critters scurrying around, monkeying up the works.

Instead of getting discouraged, though, we should recognize this as a great blessing. Our Creator, the all-powerful God of the universe, doesn't need our help; and yet he WANTS to share everything about himself with us! I believe that Jesus is a lot more concerned about our relationship WITH him than any of our accomplishments WITHOUT him. Don't get me wrong. We are called to do good works, to go and make disciples of all nations, to be ACTIVE witnesses for God. However, what we tend to forget in our haste to be useful, is that our relationship with God needs to be more about love, about devotion, about building a glorious kingdom TOGETHER. Not because He couldn't do it without us, but because he wants us there with him, walking beside him, loving and being loved. And not just in the here and now, but for all eternity.

God wants me around. Baby steps, and all. Wow.
